WHAT IS PITYRIASIS VERSICOLOR?

Pityriasis versicolor (pronounced pit-i-rye-a-sis ver-si-co-lor)1 is a fungal yeast infection that causes changes in skin pigmentation (colour).2,3 It usually occurs in hot, humid climates and mostly affects teenagers and young adults.2,3

Pityriasis versicolor (tin fish) isn’t a serious medical condition and it isn't contagious.3 It can be effectively treated by using Terbane® cream, usually within 2 weeks.4

DID YOU KNOW? Pityriasis versicolor is also called ‘tin fish’, because some people mistakenly think it is caused by an allergic reaction to tinned fish like sardines. But because it is actually a fungal skin infection, it needs to be treated with an antifungal skin cream.4

Causes of pityriasis versicolor (tin fish)

Pityriasis versicolor is caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the skin.2,3 It happens when a natural fungal yeast called Malassezia starts multiplying too quickly.2

Malassezia thrives in warm, moist and oily conditions.2 Overgrowth can be triggered by oily skin, sweating or hormonal changes.2
